How durable are glass straws?
Glass straws are very durable, our glass straws are made from a very durable glass composition. The type of glass is the same as what makes up your windows in your house, the glass you buy from your local grocery stores and the reusable, returnable glass milk containers that the factories sanitize and use over and over again.
We don’t claim it can go in to space, or used in explosion proof lighting like other glass but we don’t believe these are important for your glass straws to have.
Can I use glass straws for hot and cold drinks?
Absolutely you can!! Laboratory glass like borosilicate has the highest short-term admissible working temperature of 500ºC. Your average coffee from Starbucks is served to you at 71.1ºC and even at that you’re probably not sipping it right away. Our glass is regulated for a max temperature of 300ºC which means you are A-OK to use in your soups and hot beverages.
For chilled beverages, and cold milk shakes it works wonders as well! Since your drinks are probably not being enjoyed at cryogenic temperatures, our glass again will work just fine.
Why do dentist and hygienists recommend these straws?
Simple, drinking out of a straw helps protect your teeth against staining when drinking dark beverages like coffee and wine. Drinking out of a straw also helps with less bacteria and sugar sticking to your teeth witch limited the likelihood of decay and cavities great if you enjoy a little soda pop once and awhile.
The great thing about GLASS straws is you get all of these wonderful benefits but you don’t consume the nasty toxins from plastic.

Why are your straws not made of borosilicate glass?
Borosilicate glass is a great option for glass straws, however backed by popular belief is that this glass is recyclable and it not. We could say were no glass expert but in fact we are. We took that knowledge and created something that is just as good and well in fact better.
Sure Borosilicate glass is used chemical companies, oil and gas refineries, laboratories and even space! However we felt it was a bit unnecessary for your drinking straw.
Again borosilicate glass is not recyclable for the average consumer of this chemical composition.
It’s not biodegradable. It will not turn in to sand and it is not made up to 100% silica. It is not shatter proof or indestructible and it’s not the same as your glass cookware in anyway. It is glass that was created for laboratories. It does not break down in landfills. It’s one of the longest-lasting man-made materials. It’s estimated that it takes 1 million years for a glass to decompose in the environment, with conditions in a landfill even more so.
If you're looking to make a difference and say no to single use plastics then why not a glass straw that CAN BE RECYCLED If it has all the other great benefits. StrawHopper straws are food grade, durable, toxin free, lead free, good for hot and cold beverages, you can put it in your dishwasher and you can reuse it over and over again. When traveling around with your glass straw the simplest way to get it clean when not at home is with your cleaning brush. Most orders will come with a cleaning brush and we highly recommend them. They are definitely handy.

Why we don’t use coloured glass for out Straws, and NEVER WILL!!
It comes from China, cleanliness is definitely questionable to start with. What exactly it is made from is another worry. There is no guarantee to say what that stuff is at any time. Since we have all the compliance information, technical information and composition information for our glass, we do not want to jeopardize our product quality when we cannot reply on a supplier. Since we offer customized glass with etching if we wouldn’t put our names on it, we wouldn’t want yours on it either.
We’ve been in the glass industry for almost 10 years and visiting such factories you see very quickly how terrible it is for the environment. The very process you have to go through to manufacture coloured glass is a nasty one. We just chose not to support putting those kind of chemicals into our air.
